CONCRETE PREVENTATIVE AND STRUCTURAL MAINTENANCE
As concrete ages over time it will become deteriorated and visually unappealing. When concrete is too deteriorated for preventative maintenance such as cleaning, sealing and joint repair, the concrete will need to be removed and replaced. This applies to all types – slabs, sidewalks, curbs and structures. Removing and replacing deteriorated or damaged concrete is important because it prevents further deterioration and reduces possible safety, productivity and risk/liabilities.
Before considering any area for removal and replacement, evaluate the concrete area for underlying problems, areas with heavy traffic, unusual activity or anything that may put strain on a concrete structure. This may include things such as trip hazards, water ponding, settling or excessive damage. A few common structural maintenance items include upgrading sidewalks to meet ADA code, replacement of asphalt pavement to support dumpsters and dump trucks, pads to park heavy equipment and drainage swales.
Concrete removal involves the saw cutting, breaking and removal of the existing concrete. The aggregate base is inspected for stability prior to grading and re-compaction. Concrete may be reinforced with micro-synthetic fibers, structural macro-synthetic fibers, welded wire mesh or reinforcement bars. Replacement involves forming and pouring the specified depth of concrete and scope over the given area following specifications and using reinforcement as required for the project. Upon completion, the area will be hand-finished and lightly textured using broom finish.
